Hi H, Where are you from and which of you parents decided to call you Hush?
Yeah my dad always liked Hush, that’s parents for ya.
Well I’m originally from Newcastle but spent a good few years traveling and working in Asia as a graphic designer/illustrator, since I’ve been back I’ve lived in Edinburgh, Newcastle and London.
What's your artistic background?
5 year stretch at art school, graduating in graphic design and illustration. Early graf in late 80s, and lots of underground art scenes over the years. Also worked as a designer / art director in the arts and for some big brand toy companys☺
Which artists influence you and who will you invite for a beer if you had a choice?
I respect a lot of artists in the scene, theres a lot of talent out there but my real influences are Eduardo Paolozzi, Mimmo Rotella, Matthew Ritche, Takashi Murakami, Designers Republic, Inka Essenhigh, simon Bisley, Roy Lichenstien, Peter Blake, Vaughan Oliver, Ian Swift, Robert Rauschenberg to name a few.
Mmmm the beer would have to be with a right character or two maybe jean michael basquiat, Banksy and Salvidor dali.
What's your essential piece of kit when doing paste-up outside?
My cap, puts me right in the mood for it, don’t really work without it.
We sense a strong Manga/Asian influence in your work, can you explain why?
When you sit on a MTR (underground train in Hong Kong) Day after day, face to face with asian graphic novels it kind of never leaves you☺ Travelling and working in Asia had a huge influence on what I do. The culture is unreal. The bizarre part is the huge USA/Europe influence out there and how its adopted.
The cross culture influences interest me and affect my work.
You've exposed in big cities worldwide...Do you see a difference in the way street/urban art is interpreted/appreciated?
I don’t think you can beat this country for the passion, by both the artists and the collectors.
If you could change 1 thing in your life?
Nothing, I’m content.
What's the deal in 2008 for Mr Hush?
