Artasty Interviews

Interview with SPETO

What's your background? Art school? Self learner?

I've always had difficulties going to school, imagine that on my very first day at school I came back home with a black eye. I even have a picture with my school uniform on and a black eye. I am the youngest and my two other brothers are artists, I used to go with them to painting and sculpture classes, so I learnt art.

At school I used to go around with the geeks and the messy-boys, learning different things from each group and then I decided to leave school as I was already working with some skateboard magazines. I told my parents that this was going to be my career and that it was a new market, so they should be patient. It took about 20 years for everything to happen.

What are your favourite materials to work with?

People! Hehehe. I studied classic techniques with oil, watercolour etc. I don’t stick to the technique nor to the aesthetic; what really matters is the emotion, it's what connects us. I really like to mix techniques and I do so with spray that imitates engraving. I like to play a lot with the computer. I use sweets, matches, whatever is in mind and I also improvise.

Who influences you the most, any favourite artist(s)?

We go through several phases of learning and ripening as individual and artists. I worked for a long time with music, that influenced me a lot. Artists like DJ Nuts, Tim Maia and Jorge Ben Jor are a great influence in my work. Picasso is fucking good, he is the man! The king of Flow!

Best Gallery in the world? and why?

Art is not a Miss Universe contest or something similar; there are different proposals. That's it. I don't like questions about “the best this, the best that”. Bah!

Best City to paint outside? and why?

Again? Painting with friends is what matters

Beer and Fag or Tea and Biscuit?

Reserve two handfuls of macadamia nuts and leave in water overnight. In the morning, blend it with coconut water and strain it using a cloth. Choose a quality brown bread and spread GUI on both sides in contained doses. Chuck it on a

frying pan and after toasted, mix two GUI portions with one portion of honey and spread it on the bread. Never mix GUI and honey on the same proportion, it can be lethal. Ask an Ayurveda doctor, he will explain it better.

What are your plans in the near future? Any upcoming exhibitions?

Not yet. I am still in a studying and producing phase.
