Corey Helford Gallery
Presents

David Hochbaum
“You Are Not Falling, You Are Floating”

Opening Reception Saturday, February 13, 2010 from 7 10pm

This February Corey Helford Gallery is pleased to present “You Are Not Falling, You Are Floating” featuring new works by New York artist David Hochbaum. For his second solo exhibition at the gallery, Hochbaum creates a total environment through a stunning mixed media display of paintings, photography, sculptures and an installation.

“You Are Not Falling, You Are Floating” is an immersion into the surreal state of consciousness between being awake and asleep and the secrets about ourselves, which are revealed in our dreams. Hochbaum explains, “In dreams, all the secrets are revealed, truths are unveiled, not just the things which we mask in order to present ourselves as functioning, moral human beings amongst each other, but the building blocks which shape our character and desires. We gather these components of dreams from each other. It is a collaboration of human interaction. Our dreams are our collective voices, the voice of the universe.”

Historically, angels and demons have symbolized fears, passions, truths and desires in dreams. However, in his new collection of works, Hochbaum uses black dots hovering like satellites or symbiotic companions as well as handwritten text to represent these secrets of the subconscious. Through a large-scale series of floating, tumbling and cascading figures and sculptural works of towers, birds and spheres, “You Are Not Falling, You Are Floating” captures this alternate reality. Hochbaum’s photo constructions take a more raw direction, combining untouched photo imagery with painted narratives.

Open to the public, the reception for “You Are Not Falling, You Are Floating” will take place on Saturday, February 13 from 7 to 10pm.

Born in 1972, David Hochbaum was raised in suburban New City, New York. Feeling like an outsider, he connected with the energy and decadence of Manhattan. Hochbaum turned to art as a form of self-expression, and in 1990 attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts. Upon graduation, he returned to New York where he currently resides in Manhattan. Hochbaum is known for his unique photo constructions — paintings built on photographs and images — which take on a sculptural quality. He has exhibited in numerous galleries worldwide, including McCaig-Welles Gallery and Strychnin Gallery in Berlin, London and New York. His works have been exhibited in Germany, France, Sweden, London, Italy, Belgium, Chile and the United States. Hochbaum’s work has been included in several art fairs such as Scope, Bridge Art Fair, Art 21 in Cologne and Fusion Five in Cannes. Located in the Culver City Art District, Corey Helford Gallery was established in April 2006 by Jan Corey Helford and her husband, television producer and creator, Bruce Helford (The Drew Carey Show, George Lopez, The Oblongs). Passionate art collectors, the Helfords are producers on the art documentary The Treasures of Long Gone John and have partnered to open their first gallery. Corey Helford Gallery presents a wide range of artists, from members of the new fine art movement, such as Gary Baseman, Andrew Brandou, Coop, Natalia Fabia, Korin Faught, Sylvia Ji, Eric Joyner, and award-winning photographer Chris Anthony, to early Modernist William S. Schwartz. Notable shows include “Charity By Numbers”, which was co-curated by Gary Baseman and featured an unprecedented lineup of artists including Mark Ryden, Marion Peck, Shepard Fairey, Todd and Kathy Schorr, Camille Rose Garcia, and Michael Hussar. Rothick art haus presents Subtle Nudges

Rothick art haus presents Subtle Nudges

Rothick art haus presents “Subtle Nudges”
“Subtle Nudges” debuts artwork by Joshua Lawyer in the main gallery and also introducing artwork by guest artist Prince James Alexander Parise
Opening: January 8th 7pm-11pm
Runs: January 8 - January 31, 2010

Anaheim, CA, 1/8/10 - Rothick art haus, a gallery for emerging artist and art trends, brings together the art of Joshua Lawyer and Prince James Alexander Parise, along with live painting by Jophen Stein and music by DJ Old Boy.

Joshua Lawyer
Rothick art haus is proud to present a collection of new work by Joshua Lawyer, an emerging artist from East Palo Alto, California. Blending influences from his Pacific Islander, Tongan background and early introduction into street art by his graffiti artist brother, Lawyer’s collection depicts distorted female figures that pay homage to the sexuality and fertility found in overly robust hips. Lawyer pairs aspects of figures that were once revered like Venus von Willendorf with the pop culture aspects of Americanized women and fashion subtly steering his audience back to what was once so primitively provocative. Like all goddesses his women communicate their story of pain and sorrow, romance and reverence written on their face. His colorful backgrounds convey the complicated nature of their emotions behind their sober exterior as well as the chaotic nature of their reality.

Prince James Alexander Parise Rothick art haus pairs Joshua Lawyers “Subtle Nudges” with guest artist Prince James Alexander Parise, an emerging artist and Wisconsin native now hailing from Irvine. Parise weaves into his paintings his recent realization that through the subconscious process of his painterly creations the existence of the persistent theme of duality, multiplicity, and the liminal state. Parise’s work blends with the pop surrealist, candy coated, colorfully illustrative nature of Lawyer’s work.
